The History of Saunas and Their Significance
Saunas have been a part of human culture for thousands of years, originating in various traditions such as Finnish savusaunas, Russian banyas, and Native American sweat lodges. Historically, they served as places of healing, spiritual purification, and community bonding.
Today, saunas remain highly relevant, offering benefits such as stress relief, detoxification, improved circulation, and mental clarity. Modern innovations like infrared saunas complement traditional designs, making them accessible for diverse lifestyles. Saunas continue to provide a timeless sanctuary for relaxation and well-being in our fast-paced world.

Infrared vs. Full Spectrum vs. Traditional Saunas: What’s the Difference?
Infrared vs. Full Spectrum vs. Traditional Saunas
Saunas have evolved over time to suit various preferences and health needs, with three main types dominating the modern market: traditional saunas, infrared saunas, and full spectrum saunas. Each type offers unique benefits based on how they deliver heat and their therapeutic effects.
Traditional Saunas: These classic saunas heat the air around you, creating a high temperature environment ranging from 150°F to 195°F (65°C–90°C). This method promotes intense sweating, aiding in detoxification and relaxation. However, the heat can feel overwhelming for some, making it best for those who enjoy a vigorous and traditional sauna experience.
Infrared Saunas: A more modern innovation, infrared saunas use infrared light to directly warm your body rather than the surrounding air. Operating at lower temperatures (100°F–150° or 38°C–65°C), they provide a comfortable experience while offering deep penetration of heat to relieve muscle pain, enhance detoxification, and promote relaxation. Their gentle warmth is ideal for those who find traditional saunas too intense.
Full Spectrum Saunas: These saunas build upon the infrared model, using a combination of near, mid, and far-infrared wavelengths to provide a wide range of health benefits. Near-infrared supports skin health and cell regeneration, mid-infrared aids circulation and muscle recovery, while far-infrared promotes deep detoxification, relaxation, and cardiovascular wellness. Full spectrum saunas are highly versatile, allowing users to target specific wellness goals.
Each sauna type delivers distinct experiences and benefits: traditional saunas offer a classic, high-heat environment; infrared saunas provide gentle, efficient heat for targeted health benefits; and full spectrum saunas combine the best of infrared technology for a comprehensive therapeutic experience. Whether you’re seeking intense sweating, pain relief, or holistic wellness, there’s a sauna to suit your needs.

Benefits of Using Our Traditional Sauna
1. Pain Relief: The heat can help alleviate muscle and joint pain by promoting circulation and relaxing tight muscles.
2. Detoxification: Sweating is one of the body's natural ways to eliminate toxins. In a traditional sauna, the high heat causes you to sweat profusely, helping to flush out impurities and toxins from your body through your skin pores.
3. Relaxation and Stress Relief: The heat and steam in a traditional sauna can help relax your muscles, relieve tension, and reduce stress levels. The calming ambiance of a sauna can also promote mental relaxation, helping you unwind and de-stress after a long day.
4. Improved Circulation: The heat from a traditional sauna causes your blood vessels to dilate, which increases blood circulation throughout your body. Improved circulation can benefit your cardiovascular health, promote better oxygen flow to tissues, and aid in muscle recovery.
5. Pain Relief: The heat and steam in a sauna can provide temporary relief from various types of pain, including muscle soreness, joint stiffness, and arthritis discomfort. Heat therapy helps soothe aches and pains by relaxing muscles, reducing inflammation, and increasing flexibility.
6. Skin Health: Regular sauna sessions can improve the appearance and health of your skin. The heat opens up your pores, allowing for deep cleansing and removal of dirt, oil, and dead skin cells. Increased blood flow to the skin also promotes collagen production, which can contribute to a more youthful complexion and smoother texture.
Benefits of Using Our Infrared Sauna
1. Detoxification: Infrared saunas promote deep sweating, helping to flush out toxins and impurities from your body, leaving you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed.

3. Stress Reduction: The gentle, enveloping warmth of our infrared sauna helps reduce stress and promote relaxation, enhancing your overall sense of well-being.
4. Improved Circulation: Infrared heat increases blood flow, which can lead to better cardiovascular health and improved circulation.
5. Skin Health: The radiant heat can improve the appearance and health of your skin by promoting collagen production and reducing the signs of aging.

Dr. Rhonda Patrick's Recommended Sauna Protocol
Aim to engage in sauna sessions four to seven times per week, as supported by the study previously mentioned. This frequency demonstrated the most substantial advantages in terms of reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and overall mortality.
Dr. Patrick recommends starting with 20-minute sauna sessions. It's important, however, to begin with shorter sessions and gradually extend the duration as your body becomes acclimated to the heat.
An ideal sauna temperature is approximately 79 degrees Celsius (174 degrees Fahrenheit), which aligns with the average sauna temperature used in the Finnish study. However, please note that temperatures may vary depending on the type of sauna you use. For instance, infrared saunas maintain lower temperatures but still offer substantial health benefits by penetrating deeper into the body.
Dr. Patrick suggests incorporating a cooling period after each sauna session. This can involve taking a cold shower, immersing yourself in a cold pool, or simply spending time in a cooler environment. This rapid shift in body temperature can stimulate the cardiovascular system and yield additional health advantages. Backyard Escapism offers cold water therapy tubs designed for contrast therapy, which can be an excellent addition to your post-sauna routine.
Given the substantial sweating during a sauna session, it's imperative to maintain proper hydration. Consume water before, during, and after each session. Additionally, consider replenishing lost minerals by drinking beverages rich in electrolytes.
Ultimately, it's crucial to be attuned to your body's signals. Everyone's tolerance to heat is unique, and what suits one person may not be suitable for another. Begin cautiously and gradually enhance your sauna endurance over time. If you ever experience dizziness, nausea, or any discomfort, exit the sauna promptly.
